Closing the Pool for Winter Without Wrecking the Liner
One thing worth doing before the cover goes on: give it a proper vacuum. A cordless robotic pool cleaner does the floor, walls and waterline on its own while you get on with the rest, and it means you are not opening in spring to a green floor and a week of scrubbing. Cheaper than a single call out, and you use it every week next season.
Whichever setup you land on above, the pool still has to survive the winter. Above ground pools are the ones that suffer most from a bad close, because the walls take the pressure when the water freezes. This is the order I would do it in, and what each part is actually for.
- Balance and shock the water first A closing kit treats the water before it sits untouched for months. Do this a few days before you cover, not on the day.
- Check it with test strips Two minutes, and it is the difference between opening onto clear water in spring and opening onto a swamp.
- Clear the surface Leaves left floating stain the liner and rot under the cover. A long-pole skimmer net does it faster than a hand net.
- Float an air pillow It absorbs the expansion when the water freezes, which is what protects the walls. The single cheapest bit of insurance here.
