The short answer: the classroom themes that work best are simple ones you can carry through the whole room with a color palette, one bulletin board, the door and the reading corner. Woodland, ocean, outer space, camping, calm boho and garden themes are teacher favorites because they are easy to set up, calm to teach in and last all year.
Below are 25 classroom themes for elementary teachers, grouped by feel, each with a short “set it up” note. Pick one, choose three colors, and theme the walls children look at most. You do not need to buy everything at once.
The pieces that make almost any theme work (we earn a small commission if you buy, at no cost to you):
- Fadeless bulletin board paper: the background color does most of the theming, and it does not fade by spring.
- A scalloped border: frames boards so they look finished.
- Artificial ivy vines: instant woodland, jungle or garden along the top of a wall.
- Paper lanterns: hang from the ceiling for color without using wall space.
- Battery fairy lights: a soft glow for a calm or cozy theme (check your school rules first).

How to decorate a classroom with a theme
Start with the background colors on your boards, then frame them with a border. Add one theme piece to the door, the reading corner and your class charts. Hang a few things from the ceiling if you are short on wall space. Leave some plain wall so the room still feels calm for learning.
Can you change classroom themes during the year?
Yes. Keep the background colors and borders the same all year, then swap the theme pieces on the door and one bulletin board each season. You get a fresh look in an afternoon without redoing the whole room.
